Giant Catfish Caught in Spain

The picture of the giant catfish that Duncan Rooke (left) and Stephen Buss caught near Barcelona, Spain on July 6 2005 has finally been released.

The female catfish weighed a whopping 212 pounds (96 kg, 15 stone) and was 7'7" long (2.3 m). Rooke, Buss, and their new friend are pictured above in the River Ebro.

There's another picture here . The BBC reports that the Catfish Conservation Group says this beats the previous record ("Catfish Caught By A Briton") by 1 pound. Five stout men were needed to bring the massive sea creature ashore.

According to Rooke:


"It dragged me down the rocks. I nearly went in. God knows how I didn't... "When you hook one they are just unbelievable... "I knew I was toppling and I just let my weight go backwards and fell... Then it pulled me back on to my feet... They are scary things when you catch them..."

The Daily Mail quotes Buss:


"Two of us nearly had a hernia lifting her up the bank and we were shattered afterwards but we still had the energy to cheer and dance around her."

After an hour of admiring their catch and having it weighed and verified, they expelled air from its stomach and let it go.

Rooke, 32, lives in Woking.

Monster Fish

in 2002, this giant sturgeon washed up on the banks of the tampa bay river in florida. this 127 pound fish is no mythical creature, but biologists believe that sturgeons are rare in the gulf of mexico, and they have long been threatened with extinction. yet, this 40-year old, pregnant female was living upstream in a freshwater river in florida, lending credence to the theories that many lake monsters were trapped when rivers dried up, cutting them off from the ocean.

Wierd Fish

Some guys caught this spear fishing. such a wierd fish, has bits that float from it, anyone know what it is?

A snakehead fish with a horn?

Sarawak, Borneo (Jan 9, 2008 19:11 EST) A Malaysian fisherman, Saibi Ramli, is looking forward to good times this year because he has caught what he calls his lucky fish -- a snakehead fish with a 2cm horn on its head.

Saibi says he has never seen anything like it in his life. He caught the fish last Friday with hook and bait in the fish pond behind his home in Siburan, Kuching. He won't part with it because he believes it will bring him luck.

"I have received many offers from wealthy people but I told them it's not for sale".

Sea Monster

To read a newspaper article about this huge fish which has made many people believe in "sea monsters". This very long, thin fish, with its strange looking head covered in protrusions and reaching lengths as long as 15 meters, could easily be taken for a sea monster.

The first account of this "sea monster" was probably in 1771 when Danish naturalist Morton Brunnich noted a beast he found washed up on the beach in Norway. The oarfish, is so named because of its long oar-like pelvic fins. A few examples of these fish have appeared over the years were usually found dead at the surface or washed up on a beach. Little is known about them.

Basking Shark

A friggin’ huge shark was captured off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture. Fisherman attempted to bring the huge fish to an aquarium, but it did not survive the process. At the time, the news media was unsure of exactly what type of shark it was, but it has since been identified as a basking shark. The shark was 9-meters long and weighed over 4.5 tons, making it the largest shark of its kind captured in Japanese waters.
